In 1892, a group of British businessman with ₹ 295 investment started Britannia, a company that would go on to be India’s first biscuit brand. They started selling biscuits which were prepared at a small house in Kolkata. Britannia was later sold to Gupta Brothers. Nalin Chandra Gupta operated under the name V S Brothers.
In 1918, C.H Holmes an English businessman became the partner and he set up a factory in Mumbai. He also launched the BB Co. (Britannia Biscuit company).
During World War II, these biscuits were high in demand, This gave a boost to the company. They supplied biscuits to the British army.
In 1978, Britannia came out with its initial public offering and the company started trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Its Indian shareholding had increased to 62%, which firmly established Britannia as an Indian company.
In 1997, Britannia started to invest in dairy products. They also introduced brands like Tiger, Checkers and Jim Jams which are still in the market and quite popular.
Some of the other popular products of Britannia are Little hearts, Nutrichoice, 50-50, Good Day and Pure Magic.
In 2018, it launched a new category, Treat Creme Wafers which was very popular among kids.
Britannia has big plans of targeting the ‘healthy’ food space.
