Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) is one of the two depositories in India. It was founded in 1999 to hold securities such as shares of companies, bonds, and various other asset classes in the digital format.
In June 2017, CDSL was listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) after a successful initial public offering (IPO) – making it the first depository in Asia-Pacific region and only the second depository in the world to get listed.
Today, CDSL has 10 crore (100 million) investor accounts and has surpassed NSDL to become the largest depository in India.
CDSL is preferred by online discount brokers like Zerodha, Angel One, Upstox, 5 Paisa and others.
Shares purchased by investors through trading accounts of these brokers are stored in dematerialized format with CDSL.
How CDSL makes money?
When an investor or trader sells shares of a company, the broker deducts ‘Depository Participant’ (DP) charges. While these charges can vary from broker to broker, ₹ 5.5 goes to CDSL. This transaction fee charged contributes around 20% to its revenue.
The company also earns revenue from:
- Annual Issuer Charges: Every company pays annual charges to CDSL. This contributes 36% to their revenue.
- Online Data Charges: CDSL provides KYC services through its subsidiary CDSL Ventures Ltd (CVL). It is the largest KYC Registration agency in India. The revenue comes from one-time fee, as well as other charges for fetching data.
- IPO and Corporate Actions Charges: When a company decides to go public, CDSL facilitates crediting of securities for the Initial Public Offering (IPO). They also charge a fixed fee for corporate actions such as share-split, issue of bonus shares and the payment of dividends.
- Others: CDSL also provides e-Voting, document storage and a few other services which contributes around 12% to their revenue.
