Industrial Development Bank of India was constituted under the Industrial Development Bank of India Act, 1964 as a Development Financial Institution (DFI) and came into being on July 1st 1964.

IDBI Bank has inherited a rich legacy from its predecessor, Industrial Development Bank of India, which was an apex Development Financial Institution from 1964 to 2004.
In 2004, IDBI was converted into a banking company – IDBI Ltd, to undertake the entire gamut of banking activities while continuing to play its secular DFI role. IDBI merged its subsidiaries; IDBI Bank, IDBI Home Finance, IDBI Gilts and United Western Bank.
