India Cements is a cement manufacturer in India. The company also owns the popular Indian Premier League cricket team ‘Chennai Super Kings’.
N. Srinivasan, who currently serves as the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of India Cements – was the former head of the International Cricket Council and Board of Control for Cricket in India.
The company is one of the market leaders in cement in South India, their popular brands include Coromandel Cement, Raasi Gold and Sankar Cement. All of these are old brands with strong recall value in the southern parts of India.
Has the company created wealth for its shareholders? The short answer to the question is, no. It hasn’t.
The share price of India Cements has remained range bound over the last two decades. It goes down with the market (when there is a market crash), but it is one company that has historically underperformed the major indices.
The only time India Cements significantly outperformed Nifty or Sensex was in the 2003 bull run – when the share price went up nearly 25 times.
Post 2020, there has been some movement in the share price. With the cement sector as a whole performing well between 2020 to 2024 – it remains to be seen if the best time for India Cements shareholders is ahead of us.
The management could also look into unlocking value by listing their super-brand Chennai Super Kings as a seperate entity.
