Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) is a conglomerate headquartered in Kolkata. It has many diversified businesses across Cigarettes (leader), FMCG, Stationary Products and Hotels.
Back in 1910, what started as a modest beginning in a leased office in Radha Nagar Lane, went on to become an eventful journey. They became the market leaders in Cigarettes and Leaf Tobacco businesses.
ITC was an abbreviation for Imperial Tobacco Company.
In 1925, ITC set up a printing and packaging business to facilitate their cigarette business. What started as a small and personal aid, today works with brands like Tata Tea, Colgate Palmolive, Nokia, and others for packaging.
On their 16th birthday, they purchased a plot of land at 37, Chowringhee, (now renamed J.L. Nehru Road), Kolkata. This was a revolutionary move. The historical “Virginia House” came up on the same plot 2 years later.
ITC’s Agri-business sector is India’s largest exporter of agricultural commodities. They have come with e-Choupals across 35,000 villages helping 40 crore farmers.
While the cigarette business brings most of the revenue, ITC is exponentially expanding its business in the FMCG Sector. Their FMCG product reaches every 2nd household in India. In Covid year, they launched close to 60 products and the sales have increased by 15%.
Sanjiv Puri(MD, ITC) said “The FMCG Sector has got immense promise in India. We are also scaling up our hotels’ footprint, in the last 16 months, we opened 18 hotels. So in all the segments, we see an immense amount of opportunity. We are very optimistic and continue to invest. Demerger is a 15 months road map for the hotels subsidiary”
