Let us take a look back to the year 1968, when the late Dr. Desh Bandhu Gupta founded Lupin in Bombay (now Mumbai, India).
The company was named ‘Lupin’ because the founder was inspired by the resilience of the lupin flower that nourishes the soil while thriving in challenging conditions.
His vision was to make high quality, affordable medicines accessible to all.
Lupin started as a humble generic drug manufacturer but it was not long before the company recognized the potential for growth on a global scale.
In the 1990s, it stretched its wings and soared beyond the Indian borders, venturing into the international markets.
The new millennium blew in on the winds of transformation for Lupin. This manifested with the acquisition of Kyowa Pharmaceutical in Japan.
Also, a strategic focus on research and development elevated Lupin into the league of major players in the pharmaceutical space.
Lupin was no stranger to challenges, and they experienced their fair share.
The pharmaceutical sector is plagued with regulatory complexities. Manoeuvring the rugged terrain of compliance demanded strategic finesse. Lupin handled this challenge with resilience.
Fast forward to present day and Lupin can definitely say that the waters are calmer.
With Vinita D. Gupta steering the ship, the future looks bright.
Lupins products reach 70 countries, with a footprint that covers the following key markets:
- The United States of America.
- Homemarket India.
- Europe.
- Japan.
- South Africa.
- Australia.
- Philippines.
- Mexico & Latin America.
In May 2023, Lupin Pharmaceuticals forged an agreement to buy the French Pharmaceutical company, Mediso.
Lupin is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.
The company’s journey validates the potential of human imagination and the unwavering desire for a better tomorrow.
