Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is an Indian Multinational automobile manufacturing company with a base of operations in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
The story dates back to 1945 when the news of Jagdish Mahindra’s father’s demise hit the Mahindra family.
Jagdish Chandra Mahindra had to take over the responsibility of providing for the family’s sustenance at a very young age. This led to the inception of Mahindra & Mohammad Ltd. along with his younger brother, Kailash Chandra Mahindra, and Malik Ghulam Mohammad.
Little did they know at that time how big their dreams would become.
Mahindra & Mohammed company was set up as a steel trading company. Post the partition of India and Pakistan, Ghulam Mohammed left India and went on to become the first Finance minister of Pakistan. This led to the company’s name change in 1948, making it Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.
In 1947, the Mahindra brothers saw an opportunity in the Multiutility Vehicle sector. They struck a licensing deal to assemble and sell Willy’s jeeps in India. This was undertaken in their Masgaon factory. This was the beginning of their relationship with the Automobile industry.
Mahindra began manufacturing tractors for the Indian market during the 1960s. The acquisition of Punjab Tractor Limited made them the top tractor manufacturing company in the world with annual sales clocking more than 2 lakh tractors. They are available across 40 countries presently.
Later in 2003, Mahindra and Ford established a joint venture named Mahindra Ford India. Most of the Ford cars were manufactured in the Nashik Factory of Mahindra. Post the controlling hold of Ford in the company, the company was renamed to be Ford India. Again, Mahindra partnered with Ford, but this time the tables had turned and Mahindra had a controlling edge. This didn’t long last due to the Global economic conditions due to the Pandemic.
In 2005, Mahindra conjectured with Renault which allowed Renault to assemble and sell cars in India. As time went by, Mahindra ended their joint venture, but they still license and supply key components and engines & transmissions to Mahindra.
As the times are changing and the world is moving towards electric automobiles, M&M had planned to adapt itself to bring about innovation in this sector. In 2010, M&M acquired a 55% stake in the REVA Electric Car Company, and six years later, they renamed it Mahindra Electric Mobility Ltd after taking complete ownership.
Today, Mahindra is an icon in the automobile industry providing its cars to the Police Department and solitary vehicles to the military. They have one of the largest market shares in terms of car ownership due to the spectacular SUVs and other utility vehicles. Anand Mahindra(Chairman, M&M) said “Each growth gem has taken up the 5X challenge – Our businesses have to grow 5X in 5-7 years from where they are today in terms of market cap. I am confident that the next few years will see an astounding pace of growth for us. Our primary objective is scale, scale, and more scale. The Mahindra group has another Brahmastra – a secret weapon – and that is the power of synergy.”
