The Government owned MMTC has a long history filled with dramatic ups and downs. It was one of the biggest wealth creators in the 2004-2007 bull market – when the share price went up more than 125 times within a span of 3 years.
Like most other companies, the stock price of MMTC fell in 2008 and briefly recovered in 2009 – before completely crashing out in the years to come.
The stock remained a laggard for more than a decade before participating in the post-2020 rally led by public sector (PSU) companies.
Between 2023 to 2024, the share price has gone up by more than 5 times. Will MMTC regain its lost glory?
The government (President of India to be more specific) owns nearly 90% of the shares of MMTC. The remaining 10% is shared between domestic institutional investors (3%) and retail investors (7%). Foreign Institutional Investors haven’t yet shown any interest in the company at the time of writing this (August 2024).
Since the government owns most of the shows, the free float (shares available for active trading) is quite low – such shares can rise very quickly, which also means the possibility of the share price rising well above its intrinsic value – in a bull market – is quite high too.
