Nestle India is one of the largest players in India’s fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. They mainly deal with food, beverages, chocolate, confectioneries and supplements.
Nestle Maggi noodles is their best selling products, and a major contributor to its revenue.
The Nestle story in India dates back to the year 1912, more than 3 decades before the country’s independence. The company started by mainly dealing with importing and selling finished products in the Indian market.
After India’s independence in 1947, the country’s new economic policies stressed heavily on local production, leading Nestle to start manufacturing in India.
It set up its first factory at Moga in the northern state of Punjab.
Currently the company provides jobs to more than 10 lakh people including farmers and suppliers.
Nestle has several well-known brands including Maggi, Kitkat, Everyday, Cerelac, Nescafe, Bar-One, Munch, Polo, Milkybar and others. The company also introduced products of daily consumption such as Nestle Milk, Nestle SLim Milk, Nestle Dahi and Nestle Jeera Raita.
Nestle India is looking to tap opportunities in new categories such as ‘healthy aging’, ‘plant-based nutrition’ and ‘healthy snacking’ to boost growth in the country.
The share price has been a reflection of the trust Indians have in the Nestle brand. It has been a steady compounder over the years.
The big challenge for the company came in 2015 – when the Government of India banned nationwide sales of Maggi for an indefinite period. This was one of those rare periods when the Nestle India share price fell more than 30%.
The company took up the challenge of rebuilding the trust among consumers and by the end of 2016 – the sales of Maggi was once again back to where it was in the first half of 2015.
The next 3 years between 2017 – 2019, the share price went up 3 times.
Nearly a decade after the Maggi ban in India, the sales of the popular noodle brand continues to grow, along with other products from Nestle.
