Tata Motors is a leading multinational automotive corporation headquartered in Mumbai, India, and operates as a Tata Group subsidiary. The company is engaged in the manufacturing of automobiles, including a range of cars, trucks, vans, and buses.
Back in 1945, Tata Motors was founded by JRD Tata as a locomotive manufacturer and other engineering products.
Later in 1954, their entry into the commercial market was with a joint venture with Germany’s Daimler-Benz. They developed a manufacturing facility for Daimler lorries at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
Towards the end of the year, the association developed its first in-house chassis for the goods carrier which could carry a total weight of 3-5 tonnes.
After stamping its authority in the commercial segment, Tata Motors launched its first passenger vehicle in the SUV (Sport Unified Vehicle) segment – “Tata Sierra” based on the Tata Mobile program in 1991. Later, they launched their cars in the same segment – the Tata Estate in 1992, the Tata Sumo in 1994, and the Tata Safari in 1998.
Just a day before New Year’s Eve in 1997, Tata launched their first car in the hatchback segment, Tata Indica. At the car expo, this car caught everyone’s attention for its edgy looks claiming to have the mileage of a diesel car and interiors of Hindustan Ambassador.
It came with an air-conditioner which was a luxury back then. The whole package was sold starting at ₹2,60,000 for the base model. The result was 1 lakh car bookings.
But Tata struggled to manufacture the perfect car India wanted during that time. The lack of skill set pushed them behind. This also meant that they fell behind in the game of demand and supply.
At the same time, the market had Santro and WagonR up and running. Due to this, Indica faced severe competition and the launch of i10 at the turn of that century didn’t make things any better.
Hence, Tata bought a facelift version of Indica, the Indica V2. This phased out the ambassador in the taxi sector boosting its sales. In fact, it went on to become one of the most sold cars.. The diesel variant of V2 had little to no competition with great driving pleasure and unmatched fuel efficiency.
Later in the year 2000, Tata acquired South Korean Daewoo’s Manufacturing unit. They signed a partnership deal with Brazil’s Marcopolo, Jaguar Landrover and Hispano Carrocera. Later, they acquired 80% stake in the Trilix which is an Italian-based design and engineering company.
Today, Tata Motors has assembly plants in India, the UK, South Korea, Thailand, and South Africa. They are planning to expand their network across Indonesia, Turkey, and Eastern Europe. They have their R&D centers in various parts of the world.
Tata Motors, as of today, is a $42 Billion organization holding about 37% of the Indian commercial automobile market. On the 12th of October 2021, Texas Pacific Group (TPG) invested $1 billion in Tata Motors’ electric vehicle subsidiary.
