Vodafone Idea, also known as Vi (stylized as V!), is an Indian mobile phone network provider with its main offices situated in Gandhinagar and Mumbai.
The Company emerged as a result of the merger of Vodafone India (an Indian subsidiary of UK-based Vodafone) with Idea Cellular (an Indian mobile network operator).
This massive merger of Vodafone-Idea in Indian telecom history was an effort to counter Reliance Jio’s booming popularity as its ‘free internet’ service dirupted the industry. Is
Interestingly, this move of free services by Reliance JIO was challenged before the Competition Commission of India, which in turn settled a strong precedent as to what constitutes predatory pricing as Reliance JIO’s move slashed the market of its peer telecom industries.
The two distinct brands, Vodafone and Idea, combined to become Vi only in 2020. Previously, the corporation operated under two distinct brands, Vodafone and Idea, with both offering pre-paid and post-paid GSM services.
According to the deal, the Vodafone Group owned 45.2 per cent of the merged business, the Aditya Birla Group held 26 per cent, and the public shared the remaining shares.
During a pricing war, the merger’s main goal was to provide the telecom companies with more confidence.
However, the Vodafone and Idea merger greatly impacted the telecom industry, which saw Vodafone overtake Bharti Airtel as the primary cellular service provider.
The business’s shares saw ups and downs in February 2023, when the Government of India directed the Company to transform its $1.96 billion interest dues into equity with the valuation of 10rs/share – more than its then face value. This made the government the single largest stakeholder in the Company.
This integrated GSM operator currently covers the whole of India and provides 2G, 4G, LTE advanced levels VoLTE, 5G, and VoWiFi services.
The Company stands among the top three mobile telecom networks in the country, with more than 200+ million users and the leading 15 mobile telecom networks globally, which shows the Company’s strong potential.
